Bophuthatswana was a Bantustan within South Africa, an independent country set up by the apartheid government, for the Tswana in South Africa in 1977.

Bantustans were small independent countries set up for different black ethnic groups all over South Africa and recognised only by South Africa.

Bophuthatswana resisted incorporation into South Africa and a widespread crisis broke out in March 1994. It is best remembered in South Africa today for the televised execution of three Afrikaner militants by a black police officer.
